Miriam Nelson

Miriam Nelson, 81, of Granbury, Texas passed away on Friday, March 9, 2018 in Plano, Texas. Miriam was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and devoted friend who will be missed by everyone who experienced her love and friendship. Miriam was born in Waco, Texas on May 9, 1938 to Reverend Roy Smith and Letisha Hughey Smith. She attended Waco High School followed by Decatur Baptist College.
Miriam had a special gift of playing the piano by ear and grew up playing in her father’s church and singing in a trio. She loved to travel, read, play bridge and she was a fabulous cook; but she always felt that raising her family was her most treasured accomplishment.
She never met a stranger and loved to strike up conversation with people she met along her life’s journey. She lived a life of faith and had an abundance of kindness. She genuinely loved people and was considered a social butterfly. So much so, that short trips to shop could become an entire afternoon of conversations with acquaintances or newfound friends.
On a lighter note, she was the biggest Texas Aggie football fan. The entire family has an allegiance to A&M, but her son David, a Former Student himself, rarely missed an opportunity to watch the games with her. She always made game-day special, making sure everyone had plenty to eat before thinking of making a plate for herself. She would cheer louder than anyone whether they were winning or losing; and unapologetically would sing at the top of her lungs “The Spirit of Aggieland.” What we wouldn’t give, to have one more chance to watch a game with her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Allen D. Nelson, and brother, Frank Hughey Smith. She is survived by son, David Nelson and wife Tracy, daughter, Karen Harris, and husband Cliff. Grandchildren Kyle Nelson, Chase Nelson, Brigitte Hook, Katie Harris, Alden Harris, Cassie Vasquez, Andrew Harris, Matt Harris, Jason Harris, and ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Her death certificate was amended from “Pending Investigation” to “Undetermined” in September 2018. In May 2019, a Collin County grand jury indicted Billy Chemirmir on Capital Murder charges in her death.
